Woodwork
Beginner

We offer a four session course to take you from never picking up a carving knife to carving a spoon.

The aim of the course is to make a chopping block that meets your carving’s needs. Understand which basic tools you need, how to look after them, and how to sharpen them.

Practice basic knife skills and make various items.

We also cover the various woods to use and how to finish your items ready to use.

Intermediate

We offer workshops to make various items and develop your carving techniques.

  • Bowls carved by hand, and an introduction to the bowl lathe.

  • Kuksa or Quiach (wooden cup) carving, including the best woods and how to choose them. Design ideas and finishing skills.
  • Introduction to the pole lathe, its uses, and a chance to have a go and make either a porridge spurtle or a garden dibber.
  • Make your own round wood pole lathe over two days.
  • Make your own shave horse over two days

Coppicing
  • Learn the basics of coppicework, hand tools and how to use them
  • Understand tree uses and coppice methods.
  • Includes tree identification and coppice products.
Trees
  • Learn how to identify trees and their uses.
  • Learn the mental health benefits and engage in shinrin yoku (forest bathing).
  • Have fun in the woods building dens and bivvies.
  • Spend the night star gazing.
Food
  • Develop your outdoor cooking skills.
  • Learn how to set a cooking fire – what wood and size is best?
  • Learn to use Dutch ovens to make things like fire-bread, crumbles, stews and cakes.

We also do fun backwoods cooking sessions to learn how to cook when you’ve little access to utensils. We offer opportunities to learn how to use sticks and branches to make campfire cooking systems, like you might have in the scouts.
